This Has a Beautiful Twist to Problem SolvingDec 25, 2007 My daughter and I solve lots of puzzles, and I hadn't written any review for any of them in Amazon. This one, "The Scrambled States of America", is inspirational enough to let me free of the gravity of laziness to write a review. This puzzle is a lot of fun for people of all ages.
There are three types of pieces to a puzzle, my daughter knows: corner, edge, inside. But in this particular puzzle, The Scrambled States of America, there are inside pieces that have straight edges to them. Luckily, the box has a picture to keep our focus on the end result. The uniqueness of some of the puzzle pieces is why I think this game had won the "Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Toy Award". The process remains the same: 1) set the corner pieces first to identify the scope--or footings, as if we're building a house; 2) set the edge pieces to establish the frame; 3) fill in the puzzle with the inside pieces.
In addition to being a great puzzle, it is also very educational. Every state of the United States map has character in color and a face. Some of the states have text to describe what they are known for.

Great PurchaseOct 21, 2007 I bought this as a book and puzzle package. The story was great and funny but the book was not durable. The puzzle is great and my daughter really enjoys reading the story and putting the puzzle together. Would have had five stars all around if the book was something that could last.

Puzzle and Book are Fun Compliments of Each OtherOct 23, 2006 I first got this puzzle thinking it was just another "Learn the States" type of puzzle, which was just fine by me. When we opened up the box, my 5 year old son started asking why states had faces on them, so I started reading the "Scrambled States of America" booklet included with the puzzle. Afterwards, I looked on Amazon and this booklet was actually published as a full blown story with the same name. Not surprisingly it got 5 stars by most reviewers! The story really held his interest, and he took the book from me to read on his own, and then he started in with the puzzle with great enthusiasm. It was a little challenging for him...he is almost six and the recommended age is 8, but I think most 6 or 7 year olds will handle this with no problem. He had fun putting the puzzle together and finding hidden shapes that were shaped like actual states. To my surprise he was able to identify them too. The book and the puzzle give each of the states a unique personality, and children will subconciously learn the name and shape of the state without realizing it. My son has the puzzle about half done now, and took the book to bed with him to read. He loves it! I am going to buy the game for him for Christmas. This special edition is a good deal because you get the story (granted, it's printed as a pamphlet, not like a real book) and the puzzle in the same package for a reasonable price. The only downside is that regular maps of the U.S. will now probably seem boring by comparison.
